The Run the Gauntlet Challenge, also known as the Gauntlet Challenge, is a shock website where users are challenged to “run the gauntlet” by watching 20 increasingly NSFW videos, including pornographic, gory, and torture films like 1 Guy 1 Jar and 3 Guys 1 Hammer. The runthegauntlet.org website hosts the challenge, which was initially developed in 2010 but released in late 2014. It gained notoriety on TikTok in early 2022, when it experienced a rebirth online.

People attempt to run the gauntlet in a number of reaction videos posted online in response to the challenge. For instance, YouTuber TheSCcomedy posted a video on May 20, 2015, that has received over 56,000 views in seven years and shows six people attempting to run the gauntlet (shown below, left). YouTuber Twomad tried to run the gauntlet on April 9th, 2020, but gave up on the final video and lost almost 296,000 views in two years (shown below, right).

Runthegauntlet.org was established in 2015, according to a Vice piece from that year in which they chat with the challenge’s developer (domain registered on October 14th, 2014).
 “The Most Vile, Puke causing, Hard to watch Videos on the Internet,” claims the website’s tagline. Run Users of The Gauntlet are shown one frightening video at a time, with varying levels of difficulty, from “Beginner” to “Insane.” A complete list of the videos that have been added to and withdrawn from the challenge is accessible on Screamer. Videos in the challenge have been changed numerous times.
2022 TikTok Resurrection
Videos about “running the gauntlet” began to circulate on TikTok in 2022. A video about viewing the challenge that TikToker @milovelyyy posted on April 20 had over 29,000 views in a month (shown below, left). On April 24, TikToker @uhhhh. charlotte made a video discussing how one of the videos frightened her. In a comparable amount of time, the video had over 14,000 views (shown below, right). PopBuzz released a piece on May 17th on the challenge’s rising fame on TikTok.
